Pages from the Sketchbook #1

sketchbook_01.jpg

I have a sketchbook full of tear sheets from various magazine publications, many which are now, rather painfully, defunct (nothing will ever replace Domino, sigh). So I share with y'all.

This page explores the awesomeness that is J.Crew and their love for yellow... which I famously share, of course. Click on image to view bigger. Woot!

Lozas de nostalgia

maya_casaviejaa.jpg

Out of all the things and people I could be missing right now, and there are plenty, I miss century-old elaborate tiles that adorn the old homes in my hometown of Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. And it hit me out of the blue, with no warning, just a PANG of nostalgia. You know the kind. All I could think about was all the beautiful tiles I've stepped on and admired all throughout my Island. I love how chipped they would be, and while some may deem that as neglect, I found it even more endearing. The textures were usually rough, either by design or by age. But they were always carefully laid out, and no matter their conditions, they were simply beautiful .

And I FREAKIN miss that right now so much it hurts.

I need to go Home.

NOW.

A return to the bloom

walk421_06.jpg

Following a VERY stressful day traveling* coast to coast, I arrived back in Portland to see hundreds of new flowers in bloom, and trees covered in green. Oh how I longed for the greenery after the Winter. Moldy fruits in the fridge, I set out to Freddy's for a quick dinner and grocery shopping. I stopped myself as I inserted the keys on the car lock. It was just too wonderful to drive my car 20 blocks (after driving 4 hours from Seattle).

So I walked, I thought, I reflected, I held back tears (things are a little** frustrating right now) and I photographed pretty flowers. So yes, I'm a girl and I like taking pictures of pretty flowers backlit by a rebellious Sun. SUE ME. Also, the photo up there holds such a magical enchantment to me. I dunno. Maybe I just like pink. ^_^ You can click images to view bigger.

*I am seriously NEVER flying Delta Airlines again, and neither should you. The last 4 times I have flown with them, what should've just been an 8 hr travel days have turned into 16 hours. No joke. They have lost a customer.

**Little is QUITE the understatement. *sigh*

I look VERY excited in this one. Like, WOAH THERE.

conquistador.jpg

oh hai there

So I've been in my good ol' Savannah, GA since Thursday night, just got done shooting a super fun wedding, hanging out with my college friends and... well, DEVOURING Conquistador sandwiches from Zunzis or crying over my favorite cupcakes in the world (I seriously cried).

If I look disturbingly excited in this pictures, it's BECAUSE I WAS.

Photo taken by Le Tyler.

Mmmmm conquistador mmmmm

More photos to come when I, like, I dunno, REST.

Breath that Southern air

grateful_goingback.jpg

Oh pink magnolias. After leaving Savannah, GA in 2007 I thought I'd never see them again. They always seemed to only belong amongst the old history of my darling South.

Little did I know hundreds of Magnolia trees would bloom this month in Portland, OR. All the way out here! Just for me! For weeks and weeks I was suspicious of the tree in my front yard. The buds were rather big to be a typical Spring flower. Oh deary me... I have a magnolia tree in my front yard! If I were PMSing right now, I'd be crying. Fo sho.

I find it kinda funny that these darlings are blooming now... just when I am about to travel back to Savannah, GA later this week to photograph a wedding! YAY! I can't wait to see my friends again, to visit Liz's vintage general shop At Home on Broughton, have a Conquistador sandwich at Zunzi's on York street, imagine flights of fancy at The Paris Market also on Broughton... and of course, have THE MOST DELICIOUS CUPCAKES IN THE WORLD from Back in the Day Bakery.

Most of all, like Johnny once sang, I can't wait to set my feet on Southern soul and breath that Southern air. Ahhhh.

YOU PUNY HUMANS, YOU HAVE GOTTEN AWAY THIS TIME!

We interrupt thIS transmission of Amy Nieto's Photography and Oddities Blog to bring you an important message from our Future Extraterrestrial Overlords:

Allright, you Puny Humans. We were planning on descending upon your miserable planet today after Tea Time (local time) to destroy your laughable civilization.

BUT... you have been saved by the following humans interpreting our National Anthem As Sung By Her Majesty The Queen Julie Andrews. This melted our cold, blobby triple hearts.

But WE'RE STILL WATCHING YOU, HUMANS!

Found via Life is Beautiful's blog. Yes, I wrote this blog thinking of Lrr, Ruler of Omicron Persei 8.

27

grateful_27.jpg

Unlike some women my age, I am actually quite excited to have turned 27 today (April 6). I'm looking forward to my thirties; I believe that's when things will start to REALLY happen. Who knows, maybe I'll even be married by then (HA!). But I am immensely grateful for what I have now, though it is not much.

That up there is Summer, and if I wasn't so darn exhausted I'd blog about our Sunday Fun in the Sun!

But I am le tired. And am going to bed.

Hearts!

Gratitude: Windows Open

gratefultemplate_windowsopen.jpg

Windows open.
60 degrees outside.
Sun shining as bright as Home.
Worried heart calming down.
Hands have stopped shaking.
Dreaming about the Ocean, always the Ocean.
Listening to Clarity* and Why Georgia.
Tomorrow 71 degrees.
When was the last time I felt 71 degrees?
Maybe that explains why my mind has been so out of orbit.

This morning, there's a calm I can't explain...

Every Portland blog must be blogging (or will on Monday) about how UNUSUALLY nice this weekend is. Sorry, but I hold on to 71 degrees with the strongest of grips. If I let go, I'll plunge back to the gloom. But if I just put more strength in that arm, it'll be 80... and I'll be Home.

*Clarity will ALWAYS remind me of an all-nighter Tony Maitz and I had back in 2004 editing a still-shot film we had to do for the DREADED Lightning & Field course in the film dept at SCAD. We had MTV on, and Clarity was played like 50 times during that night... along with Maroon 5's This Love.

Crafternoon Pt 2.

march29_02.jpg

march29_theculprits.jpg

More images from ISOLATION WEEKEND that didn't quite happen but what DID happen was a fun short CRAFTERNOON with Summer and Kelly... and other key players. :) Like The Boys.

march29_theboys.jpg

Do not be fooled by their cuteness, these two are QUITE the handful but I think they are super adorable!

A stare-down.

miniprev_azariah.jpg

Welcome little Azariah to the world! He did not stop staring at me the entire time I was there. That's okay, I don't mind being stared at by adorable boys like him.

Maybe he remembers my voice? Or perhaps the click click click of my camera from months ago? :)

Yellow Composition - "lightning bugs and other mysteries"

yellowcomposition.jpg

Me? Obsessed with yellow? I have no idea what you are talking about.

This is me practicing some still life from the Martha Stewart School of Perfect Photo Styling.

Seriously, I love Martha Stewart. If you only knew how many tear sheets did I save from two years' worth of MS Weddings hoarding. Unhealthy.

Thank you all and stuff!

thankyoupic.jpg

So I've never really taken the time to thank y'all readers and commenters and lurkers (oooh stalkers, I love them) for stopping by my blog. It may seem that I never answer any comments, but I do reply to you via email because this blog service is stupid and I get HEAVILY SPAMMED EVERY MINUTE therefore, comments need to be approved. Notifications for comments go to my email, but every now and then real comments go straight to my SPAM filter. So now I have to check the admin side of the blog every day to see if any real comments are made.

It's stupid and I can't wait to switch over to Wordpress and turn this into a pretty pretty blog. Like Unruly Things's new look! Darling.

So yes, thank you all, I really appreciate it. HEARTS.

OH OH. Also, please refer to this picture. Look at the white strips running along the windows. Those are weather strips because THIS HOUSE IS SUPER COLD. It's prob 53 inside right now. *sigh* I can't wait to live in a place with energy-efficient windows that will keep my little butt warm during Winter.

Whatevs.

HEARTS!

Things that are awesome... March 29th, 2009

march29_20.jpg

Remember when I mentioned something about WEEKEND OF ISOLATION or something or other? Yeah. Not so much. I spent an afternoon crafting with Summer and Kelly at Summer's super cute little house. Lots of pictures were snapped. These will come first. Just some things I think are awesome and are probably the cure to The Blues.

march29_07.jpg
Yes, they were DELISH.
